Hi Steve, welcome to the forums.

I think your first question about the compiler error is answered here:

The second issue I am not sure about. Obviously if you could not compile the example you should not be able to run it. At some point in the past the examples were accidentally being compiled into the lcsim jar file, maybe this is happening again. How did you get your copy of the lcsim software? Did you donwload it with the JAS download manager, or did you compile it yourself?
