Hi all,

According to the ROOT folks, packages with ROOT dependencies should not rely on the environment variable $ROOTSYS, since this is incompatible with most distribution-provided ROOT packages, which installs ROOT in the usual places (/usr/bin, /usr/lib, /usr/lib64) etc.

Quote:
please let us know which packages depend explicitly on $ROOTSYS because they need fixing as they should not rely on ROOTSYS but on root-config, or when in code on the global gRootDir or on include/RConfigure.h.

Gear depends on the $ROOTSYS variable and the effect of this is that Gear fails to compile when installing slicPandora and doesn't say why. I'm working around the issue by installing ROOT according to the 'Location Independent Installation' instructions at this page: http://root.cern.ch/drupal/content/installing-root-source.

Thanks,
Alex Conway
