The open() method of the LCWriter should not add the extension .slcio to the filename if the filename already has an extension. I don't know what the LCReader does in that regard, but if it has the same behaviour I would suggest that that be changed as well. The way it is, it is difficult to write code that supports multiple file formats, some of which allow the user to specify any arbitrary name. The user then expects to find the file with the chosen file name, not one which has an (extra) extension the user didn't provide.

That aside, I think the extension .slcio is a wonderful tribute to the SLAC SLC. But I wonder if it was intentional...
